Favourite Woods For Chiminea

Pinion Pine wood is a favourite with chiminea owners for its pleasant pine aroma, which helps ward away mosquitoes and other flying insects. In the southwest of USA, pinion is a common fireplace and stove wood. The advantages of pinion wood is it burns well with other woods, keeps an active flame and products good heat. The tree is located in the states of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and Utah.

Alligator Juniper is commonly found in New Mexico, Arizona as far north as San Francisco and as east as Texas and occur in the dry rocky slopes of mountains. When burning the juniper will give of a cedar like smell but will have the tendency to crackle and pop. Easily to start and will provide a lively fire with little smoke.

One seed Juniper wood burns similar to alligator juniper and has the crackle and pop sounds too and will give a cedar like aroma too.

Mesquite is best known for its smoking abilities when cooking, so for Chiminea grill users mesquite gives steaks an incredible flavour.

Chiminea have become a very popular backyard accessory in the United States, typically pinewood is built as it gives out an aromatic smell and repels the bugs too. A disadvantage of the Chimineas is they are unable to withstand any thermal shock which occurs when a sudden rain fall after the chiminea had become very hot. Frequent problems are cracking, flaking of glaze and crumbling of the clay. As the chimineas come from Mexico and there is low rain fall it can be understood why when it comes to a colder country like United States these problems arise. In Mexico when they crack they will simply make another will nearby resources.

Just about any fireplace wood can also be used in a Chiminea.

Garden Design Tips - Everyone Loves a Fire Pit

Nothing is more enjoyable than sitting around a camp fire with family and friends; the conversations, the laughs, the guitar sing-alongs and of course the marshmallows. Why not bring the county into the city with a backyard fire pit.

I've had a fire pit at every house since I was kid. I remember the 1st one my father made out of old furnace parts. The fire was on top of a cast iron piece that we could then easily shovel out the ashes from below (my father wasted nothing!)

The first thing you will need to decide when choosing a fire pit is whether you want a portable or permanent one. Portable ones include the popular Chiminea. Chimineas can be made out of cast iron, clay, aluminum and copper to list a few.

Another type of portable looks basically like a big bowl made out of many of the same materials as the Chiminea. These bowl type fire pits usually come with a screen lid which help keep embers from becoming a fire hazard. Permanent fire pits range from simple to sophisticated. My current one is a large truck tire rim that I've sunk into the ground. Its not as easy to clean out as the cast iron furnace from my childhood but it's a little easier on the eyes.

For a more traditional look, you could have a stone mason build fire place that looks more at home in the house than in your back yard. For a contemporary look, many people are using special tempered colored glass with natural gas for an amazing look.

If you decide to install a fire pit of any type in your backyard, you MUST check with local and municipal bi-laws to see if they are allowed where you live. If you're still unsure, call your local fire department and they will be more than happy to help you.

A Guide to Outdoor Fireplaces - Types, Features, Function and Benefits

Backyard fireplaces are very popular in outdoor accessories and for a good reason. Not only are they attractive, adding a touch of charm to the backyard, but they are useful as well. There are several things you must take into consideration, including style and safety, so it is important to understand and take time while choosing this type of fireplace.

Types:
Chimineas are one of the several types of backyard fireplaces which originated in Mexico, and if you want an authentic one, it would be made from clay. But you might also find several types made out of metals as well, mostly from cast iron. Both have their won advantages and disadvantages. Metal fireplaces have the advantage of lasting longer, but many people still want the traditional style for added charm. These types of fireplaces are round on the bottom, and have a tall chimney on top. Backyard fireplaces come in so many styles and sizes that you could find one that fits the size of your backyard and its decor. They could be free-standing or dug into the ground. Fireplaces should never be placed on a wood deck. They should be placed out in the yard, and should be lined with paving stones around it.

Features:
Gas-burning outdoor fireplaces are like the indoor fireplaces. They do not create much smoke and are easy to operate. These types of units also do not create any sparks. The only one thing that you need to consider is that the gas lines must be brought out to the installed location. This would mean that you will have to dig up your backyard and install gas lines. Wood-burning backyard fireplaces are for those who want an authentic look and the old fashioned charm. One way to build this yourself for little cost is to simply dig a small pit in your backyard and line it with bricks allowing a fire to burn safely and with little potential for flame spread.

Function:
A backyard fireplace can be a perfect place to enjoy an evening with friends after work, or a place to just sit and unwind. You can also get backyard fireplaces that come equipped with a grill and BBQ for cooking a meal outdoors. Outdoor fireplaces come in all sizes, to suit your requirements.

This particular type of fireplace is not permitted in all locations. Before you purchase one you should check with the local laws. There also might be limitations on size, style, and fuel type that are used for backyard fireplaces. They may need to be located at a certain distance from other houses and from the neighboring properties. Outdoor fireplaces may also be needed to be installed on fireproof surfaces.

Benefits:
Outdoor fireplaces can be useful anywhere. Even in places with warmer climates, the evenings could be cool, and a comforting backyard fireplace can make it possible to sit out in the evenings comfortably. In the colder climates, a backyard fireplace can allow you to enjoy the outdoors even in freezing winters without you having to feel uncomfortable. A backyard fireplace not only lets you entertain family and friends in style but it also makes the backyard look more visually appealing and charming giving it an inviting look which could make anyone want to just sit outside and enjoy the outdoors.

What to Burn in Your Chiminea

Having an outdoor fire on a cool night can allow you to enjoy the outdoors and provide for a cozy area to gather and relax. A Chiminea makes a wonderful outside fireplace that is both heat giving and attractive. They are also portable, making it possible to use them just about anywhere in your garden or patio. If you are thinking of purchasing a Chiminea and are wondering what you can burn in it, the answer is pretty simple and I will outline the main types of fuel available in this article.

Charcoal

If you are using a Chiminea for the first time and wish to use it for cooking then it's probably best to start with charcoal. You can purchase charcoal briquettes which are self lighting and require little or no effort to get going. Simply light with a match or lighter and away you go. It's best to leave the fire burning for about 20 minutes if you are planning to cook anything.

Wood

Since Chimineas were made to burn wood, then wood is an obvious choice. It also produces the least number of sparks which makes it a safe option. Generally, hardwoods are the best to use, and if you like aromatic wood there are several different kinds to choose from.

Pinon wood gives off a wonderful pine scent and also chases misquotes away, making enjoying your fire even more pleasant. Cedar, especially red cedar, also gives off a wonderful aroma as does apple wood. In addition, if you want a bit more aroma in your fire you can dry orange or apple slices and add them in with your logs. You can also try mature pine cones. The Mayan people of Central America used 'Ocote' in their clay Chiminea which serves two purposes: it is a natural firelighter and also gives off a pleasant aroma when lit due to its high resin content.

Eco logs are a cheap, simple alternative and are made from compressing saw dust to form a log shape. They usually come in a wax paper bag which you can light directly and let burn in your Chiminea without the need for any other firelighter. They can burn for up to 2 hours so are worth having around to get a fire started, you can then add other fuel later on.

Other Sources of Heat You Can Use in Your Chiminea

You can purchase other kinds of fuel for your Chiminea as well. Propane and gas inserts are designed so that you can burn gas in your cast iron or steel outdoor fireplace. You can then remove the insert when you want to use wood. Another alternative to wood is alcohol gel. This burns cleanly and only produces water as a byproduct, making it safe for use indoors. However, if you are going to use a Chiminea indoors please use common sense when choosing where to position it and do not attempt to cook or add any other fuel as this could lead to a house full of smoke and possible asphyxiation.

What not to burn in your Chiminea

You should never burn treated wood or wood pellets. Treated wood gives off toxic fumes which can affect your health and wood pellets, such as those used in a wood pellet indoor stove, leave a long ash which can quickly build up causing you to spend more time cleaning out ash than enjoying your fire. Also avoid green wood, as it will not produce much fire but will cause a lot of smoke. Dry wood is always best to burn when using any type of wood fire. Never use gasoline or petroleum based accelerants to start your fire. These can be extremely dangerous and could even cause an explosion when used in an enclosed fireplace.

Most manufacturers will supply instructions and basic maintenance information with your Chiminea so please refer to the booklet provided. If in any doubt contact the supplier or the manufacturer direct and ask them for advice. And on a final note, if using a clay Chiminea always make sure that you place sand or stones in the bottom of it before adding the fuel as clay is prone to cracking with sudden changes in temperature.

Chiminea Cooking Guide - My Top Tips

Before you start doing any cooking you need to make sure that your chiminea is set up on a stable base that is not made of any type of combustible materials. You also want to be sure that the chiminea is completely level. It should not wobble at all so you will not have to worry about it toppling over while you are cooking and starting things in the surrounding on fire. Never leave your chiminea unattended while there is a fire lit. If you have any children they could easily get burnt if no adults were around.

When you are getting ready to begin cooking you should be sure to start the fire in your chiminea at least 30 minutes before you are ready to place any food inside. This will give the fire ample opportunity to get going so that your food will cook evenly and quickly. You never want to start the fire with any kind of accelerant. Barbeque coals are the best thing to use when you are cooking. Always use barbeque tongs when you are preparing your food and using fire gloves would be a smart extra measure to make sure you are safe while preparing food.

When you are working with a clay chiminea you want to be sure to seal it against the elements. While this is not always needed it can extend the life of your chiminea. Furniture and Butcher's wax both work very well for this task. You should also look into getting some type of covering for your clay chiminea, a grill cover would work and many chiminea dealers offer storm covers. If you live in an area that gets very cold it is best to store your clay chiminea inside so you can prevent it from cracking. When storing your clay chiminea indoors you do not want to store it on its stand.

When you are cooking with a stainless steel chiminea you should be sure to pay attention to the food that you are cooking because it can cook very quickly. This is because fires can burn longer and hotter in stainless steel chimineas. Just as you would want to protect your clay chiminea you would want to protect your stainless steel chiminea from the elements. While stainless steel chimineas are not likely to crack they can become rusty if left out in the rain for too long. Now while stainless steel chimineas can be stored outside in colder weather, if you choose to store them inside you would store them in a manner similar to a clay chiminea.

Cooking with a chiminea can be a lot of fun as long as you do your research and take the proper precautions before you start.

Chiminea - The Traditional Mexican Outdoor Fireplace

Two types of outdoor fireplace are available to the interested homeowner: portable ones to move around in your garden, and built-in ones. Of the portables ones, the most common ones in the U.S. are chimineas. They are traditional Mexican fireplaces and consist of a bowl-shaped lower part and a much narrower chimney on top.

In Mexico, chimineas were already in use centuries ago to provide heat and a place for cooking to their owners. Their bowl-shaped firebox has an opening to one side and is therefore known as a frontloader. Due to this construction, the heat is radiated to one side only, which is useful for keeping warm during chilly nights. The bowl shape also helps to improve air circulation within the firebox. The long chimney releases the smoke above the heads of the people sitting around the outdoor fireplace, which helps to keep them mostly smoke- and ash-free.

Depending on the material used for construction, chimineas have specific advantages and disadvantages. Typical materials are clay, which is the traditional choice, and metal, mostly cast iron and aluminum. The main advantage of clay chimineas, also known as ceramic or terracotta fireplaces, is their lower price and the fact that they are usually delivered fully assembled and ready-to-use. Clay stores heat very effectively and much longer than metal, while not becoming as hot, especially on the outside. Clay models are, however, mostly very heavy, which somewhat diminishes their use as a portable fireplace.

Also, clay is a very brittle material, which is prone to develop cracks after prolonged use, especially in humid climates. Clay chimineas therefore break more easily than metal ones, particularly at the bottom of the bowl-shaped firebox, where the wear is greatest from the extreme heat. In rare cases, the bottom may even fall out due to widening cracks. As humidity increases the risk of breakage, clay chimineas must never be used while still wet, for example due to rain or watering. Clearly, quality is of major importance under these circumstances and a thorough comparison of models should always include a check for manufacturing quality and durability. Their fragility also requires more maintenance, including protection from humidity and regular cleaning.

In comparison, cast iron and aluminum chimineas are much less maintenance-intensive and more durable than clay models. The main difference between the two variants is the significantly higher weight of iron and its susceptibility to rusting in humid environments. Both usually need some sort of assembly before being ready for use.

Selecting the right material therefore is the most critical step when buying a chiminea to ensure it meets your personal criteria for price, durability and maintenance requirements.

The Growing Popularity of Chimeneas

Chimeneas have become one of the most popular garden accessories. Not only are they used for their ornamental value but also for outdoor cooking like grilling or even frying. These originated in Mexico where they served as a medium to cook food and also to keep the family warm. They are now very popular among people who love to enjoy a cold evening besides the fire. They are better than a fire pit because the heat from a chimenea can be contained and controlled. It is easier to put out a fire on a chimenea than on a fire pit because of the design. Also these chimeneas have a tall neck, which means that the smoke that comes from burning wood escapes into the air. Unlike a fire pit, chimeneas enclose a fire and thus guarantee safety for the people around. Also unlike a fire pit they do not leave a mound of unburned ash or charcoal.

These chimeneas were traditionally made of clay, with different finishes like terra cota, glazed or enameled. These come in various shapes and sizes. chimeneas made of metal are more popular today because they do not crack easily like Clay Chimeneas. Among the common metals used for chimeneas are cast iron, metal, cast aluminium, stainless steel and even sheet aluminium. Mass produced chimeneas made of sheet metal are available at a bargain price, but these rust out quickly. Chimeneas made up of copper give a green and tarnished look after a fire or two and have to be kept covered when not in use. If you want your chimenea to be a permanent fixture in your garden or backyard the cast iron material is a great option. These are very bulky and cannot be moved very easily. Another issue with these types is that they rust easily. But that rusted look adds to the attraction. Their prices range from $ 4, for small clay candle chimeneas to even $ 400 for cast iron chimeneas.

If you plan to use your chimenea for cooking, wood is the best fuel. Oak is a hard wood that's popular among most users. Pinion is also recommended by manufacturers as this gives out a natural fragrance and is a natural insect repellant. There are also manufactured fire logs that ignite very fast, but are not suitable for cooking.

Chimeneas are a great addition to your backyard or garden, only if they are maintained properly. It is important to keep them covered at all times when not in use. Clay chimeneas crack up if suddenly exposed to extreme climate. For this reason, they can be treated before burning. They are to be exposed to small amounts of fire on a sand bed. As cast iron chimeneas rust easily they need to be painted with high grade industrial paint which is typically done before you order. It is also important to use these very safely as their design allows for a lot of heat to be generated. These are outdoor fire appliances and should be never used indoors.

You can opt for a chiminea which is an attractive style good for heating bonfire. It has accessories like stainless steel grills and doors if you want to do some cooking. There is also a popular fire pit with a large 35 inch porcelain coated steel fire bowl and supported by a stable and fashionable stand. It can use up to four logs. With so many styles and designs available, you have to know basic elements and technicalities about the subject to make an intelligent choice.

With regards the materials used to build fireplaces, there are various types. There is the cast iron or cast aluminum type. The beauty of a cast iron is it is quite sturdy and with proper maintenance, it will last a long time. This kind is much heavier than cast aluminum. To prevent it from rusting, hot paint is the answer. Cast aluminum is an excellent choice. It is light in weight and rust resistant. It can last for many years. Another type is the sheet metal fireplace. This is not a popular variety because of its lack of durability. It is also prone to rust.

There is still another option which is the copper fireplace. Although it looks good when it is new, the downside is it rusts very quickly. The last option is a clay or ceramic fireplace. This type is very affordable but is not expected to last long. When canvassing around for the best material, pick the one which is durable and lasts long.

Enjoying the outdoors can be maximized to the fullest even during chilly nights or days with the aid of a stable and beautiful exterior fire pit. You can add your own touch by putting brick, stone or stucco to create the kind of look you desire. Being able to enjoy outdoor living with warmth and coziness during fall, winter and spring should be worth the investment, time and effort you put in to your outdoor fireplace project.

Buyer's Guide to Backyard Fireplaces

Backyard fireplaces add ambiance and warmth to your outdoor living area. Not only do they add to the decor but they are the place where most of the entertaining and conversations take place.

There are many things that you need to think about when researching backyard fireplaces. What are you going to use it for? Do you want something fancy or plainer? What type of design do you want? How much room is in the backyard or on the patio for a fireplace? These are just a few of the questions you should ask yourself while you are researching.

The least durable backyard fireplaces will be made of thin metals and clay. They will also be less expensive. The more durable ones would be made of stainless steel, cast iron or aluminum. Copper is also quite durable, but you need to know that it does oxidize and will change color from golden-bronze to a greenish hue. Also, you should be aware of the fact that iron may rust if left out in the rain and snow.

You will find backyard fireplaces that are fueled by wood, natural gas, liquid and gel. The gases burn cleaner and there is less mess than wood. Of course, with wood fireplaces you will have more work to do such as cutting the wood for the fire but many people enjoy the crackle and pop of a real outdoor fire. If you choose natural gas, you will need to install the gas line and the fireplace will be placed in a permanent location rather than being able to move it around.

There are many different styles of backyard fireplaces available. The chiminea, also known as a Mexican fireplace, has an opening into a large belly where you build the fire. It has a tall chimney helping with the ventilation of the smoke up and away from people sitting around it. The chiminea is portable, so a lot of people enjoy it for this reason. Sometimes you will find these backyard fireplaces sometimes have an opening that goes all the way through the construct rather than just in front and sometimes they even have openings that wrap around or near it. You will find chimineas that are made of clay, cast iron, aluminum or copper.

Outdoor fire pits are another form of backyard fireplaces. Some people also call these fire bowls. The fire pit is the most portable of all of the backyard fireplaces and also takes up the least amount of space. They are ventless and do not have chimneys. Fire pits can be bowls, pots and pits that hold the fire within its boundaries. You may find some fire pits that come with wheels for easier portability. Without having a chimney to force the smoke away from your guests, it could be a little smokier than the other backyard fireplaces. Fire rings are also sometime called fire pits.

Fire rings are similar to what you find in a campground. They are simply containment areas for the backyard fire. These are the least expensive of all the backyard fireplaces. You can easily place a grill over the top for cooking.

Finally backyard fireplaces can be just that, fireplaces. This style looks like your regular indoor fireplace but freestanding rather than a part of a wall. The use of spark screens will keep the embers from escaping, protecting the surroundings. These fireplaces may also come with louvers that will help control the heat. These types of fireplaces are the most controlled, although they are definitely not portable. They are also the most expensive types to purchase. You need to hire someone to construct the hearth and surrounds or be able to do it yourself as well as purchasing the fire unit. The good news is this allows you to choose the type of material that you want. You can also find fireplace kits, although they will still need to be built and put together in some way depending on the fireplace kit purchased.

Pricing varies with the many types of backyard fireplaces to choose from. Chimineas can cost anywhere from 0 to 0. Smaller, plainer outdoor fire pits can be found for around 0. Larger and fancier ones, such as fire tables, sell for 00 to 00. Fire rings, being the least expensive, can be found for 0 or less. The fire units for the true outdoor fireplaces are anywhere from 0 to 00 but you also need to purchase the materials as well as maybe having to hire someone.

Now that you know the choices that are out there for backyard fireplaces, as well as the pros and cons, its time to start choosing what you would like and imagine how it will fit in your outdoor living space. Make sure that it fits well into the space available as well as into the scheme of the landscaping. One last thing you might want to think about is if you want to cook on it or just enjoy the fire. Once you have decided all of this, as well as what you want it to look like, you are ready to go shopping and start enjoying your evenings in your backyard even more.
